Things to Do
A chance to truly get back to nature.
You will encounter abundant bird life on early morning walks through the village.
Take a carrot or an apple to feed the horses.
Hop onto a canoe and paddle up river quietly; you might see bushbuck foraging on the river banks in the late afternoon.
The young and the brave can find the “king swing” which hangs from the tall Eucalyptus trees to the right of our jetty – a high tide activity at your own risk…
Float left and find a secluded little beach for swims and sundowners.
Settle under the trees with a good book and be content to rise and sleep with the sun.
One could take the dirt road and visit Puntjie, where the Duiwenhoks river meets the sea, it is ruggedly beautiful and windswept with about 50 “Kapsteilhuisies” which one can only visit by invitation.
Fish on the banks of the Duiwenhoks River but be sure to have a licence as the Duivenhoks Conservancy has strict environmental guidelines.
Near the olive groves in Vermaaklikheid is a sign for the Post Office and Kontrei Winkel (you can’t miss them). Follow these up a hill and you end up at the farm of Andries and Joey Odendaal. At Joey’s Kontrei Winkel (country shop) you can stock up on wood, cool drink, sugar, coffee and local butter, milk, boere beskuit and melktert.
Stillbaai which is 37 km away, offers shopping if you had to run out of food, coffee shops, restaurants, surfing and more beautiful beaches. Stock up at the Inveroch Gin Distillary in Stillbaai and hurry back to The House of Eels for unequalled tranquillity.
